Transcription of musical scores in digital format

First activated on: September 2019
Status: active

The project involves the research, cataloging, transcription and elaboration of musical scores coming from musicological sources. Starting from an assigned piece and the related musical track, students will have to verify the existence of the score in symbolic form on the most popular online platforms of musicological sources (International Music Score Library Project, Project Gütenberg, kunstderfuge.com, piano-midi.de , Classical Archives). If the score does not exist in symbolic form but only in the form of a scanned image, students will have to transcribe it using professional and open source programs for music notation (MuseScore). Subsequently, they must verify the correspondence between the score downloaded or transcribed and the piece for which the recording is provided in order to correct the score. The document thus produced will be added to musicological datasets used throughout the world for research in the field of musical computing. Specifically, the resulting dataset will be used to produce automatic instruments for musical transcription, analysis of artistic performances and audio restoration.

This didactic experience focuses on the realization of music documents in IEEE 1599 format, an international standard which provides a multi-layer representation of all the information related to a single piece of music.
Student's tasks include: transcribing scores through a digital editor (e.g., MuseScore and Finale), exporting them as XML, entering catalog metadata, performing the graphic mapping of score images and the sound mapping of the tracks to be synchronized .
Examples of the results produced by these operations can be found in the ▸EMIPIU platform.
The documents prepared by students will increase the digital archive publicly available via the web.
