6 The audio decoder of the CD-I player

The ADPCM decoder is extremely simple, as it does not take any decision. The decoder's simplicity is an advantage, as it assures short processing time during the reproduction of audio visual sequences.

The decoding process must nonetheless be performed with a high degree of accuracy, to ensure a proper handling of overloading samples caused by the presence of the additional noise component. A certain amount of degradation can in fact be induced by a non controlled feedback of clipped samples in the decoding filters, which have Infinite Impulse Response (IIR).
